STEROLSOURCE® Plant Sterols

STEROLSOURCE® Plant Sterols is a plant-derived and clinically proven cholesterol lowering ingredient. Plant sterols are naturally occurring substances that have been found in studies to reduce the absorption of dietary cholesterol, which can significantly improve cardiovascular wellness with healthier serum cholesterol and LDL levels.

More Information

STEROLSOURCE® Plant Sterols are structurally similar to cholesterol. Plant sterols have been found, in studies, to reduce the absorption of dietary cholesterol, which can impact serum cholesterol levels [Mayo Clin Proc 78:965-78 (2003); AJCN 74:33-43 (2001)]

Scientific studies show that plant sterols can effectively reduce LDL-cholesterol levels. An intake of 1-3 g plant sterols per day can substantially and consistently lower blood levels of total cholesterol by 6-10% and LDL-cholesterol by 8-15% (Katan MB, et al. Efficacy and safety of plant stanols and sterols in the management of blood cholesterol levels. Mayo Clinic Proceedings. 2003, 78:965-978).

Supporting heart health to prevent dire cardiovascular events is one of the top concerns among middle-aged and elderly Americans. Approximately 64 million Americans currently suffer from cardiovascular complications, and SourceOne’s STEROLSOURCE® Plant Sterols offer the health-conscious consumer an effective solution that may help prevent cardiovascular and coronary problems.

How do plant sterols work in the body?

When plant sterols are present in the body, less cholesterol is able to enter the micelles and less cholesterol absorption is possible which reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed into the circulatory system. By blocking cholesterol absorption in the body, plant sterols (plant extracts) can help lower cholesterol naturally.

The FDA has permitted the following claims for products containing plant sterols:

Plant Sterols: Foods containing at least 0.4 gram per serving of plant sterols, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 gram, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of [name of the food] supplies ___ gram(s) of plant sterols.

Plant Sterol Esters: Foods containing at least 0.65 gram per serving of plant sterol esters, eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 1.3 grams, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of [name of the food] supplies ___ gram(s) of plant sterols.
